"Sow" Many Seeds, So Little Time!

The weekend was spent at the soccer field. Sam scored a goal and his team won! Addie only played 2 quarters of her game. She played well, but did not get to score this time.

Sunday, Tom was out of town, so Addie and Sam and I went to church without him. We were amazed to see a hot air balloon in the parking lot. Kinda took us off guard because that's not something you see every day! Sunday afternoon, Dad, Ed, Dean and I flew to Nashville, courtesy of Dean to hear Susie Vanderlip's performance for Legacy of Hope. We ate dinner at Cracker Barrel and Dad treated all of us. The performance was entertaining, but did not inspire me to action. I was not emotionally touched, but was impressed with her athleticism and youthful appearance! We got home about midnight.

Monday was a "dream come true" day as Hallerin Hill and Bill Williams visited my classroom to film a commercial promoting "Reach Them to Teach Them" for Comcast. I can't wait to see the finished product! Nolan Smith is working on putting it together for us. Dave Gorden did the voice overs. Tom dropped Sam off because he was headed back to Athens with Steve Mathis to finished up a project. Ed and Olivia came to make sure we got what we needed for the website and spent most of the time playing baseball in the hallway!

Tuesday, I blew off my Dept. Chair meeting and chose to cheer Addie on at her Cross Country meet. She did great! I think she was in the top 25 girls to finish. She's going to be amazing by the time she hits 5th grade, especially if she keeps it up! I was so proud of her. Sam and Tom had soccer practice, so Tom dropped Addie and me off at the BreadBox. I drove thru Tropical Smoothie Cafe for a chicken salad and Addie slurped down some cereal before heading to bed.

Wednesday was the slowest paced day of the week, so far. I met with Mickey Lee, my protege, at school for about an hour. I stopped by my mom's to get the kids because Tom had to do something in Maryville and they didn't want to go with him. Sam was having fun drawing pictures, so I let him stay a little longer while Addie and I went to the grocery store for chili fixin's for Lisa's birthday tomorrow. I sent Drew to get him so he would get to see his grandparents and his grandparents would get to see him!

The evening was spent working on Addie's seed project, practicing Sam's weekly words, and checking out the test data website. YUCK! I STILL have a gigantic stack of papers to grade and no intention of tackling them tonight!

Like Sand Through My Fingers

That's what I've been up to for the past two weeks. :)
I must mention that I had the opportunity to meet Pat Summit last Wednesday. She agreed to be interviewed for "Reach Them to Teach Them." Scott Cagle had the courage to ask her how she knows when she meets a winner, and she gave him three ways. First, she said they have to be hard-working. Second, they must be passionate, and third, they must be about something bigger than themselves. Her story of influence was about her 9th grade History teacher and basketball coach. He was the first teacher she ever had who paddled her for not giving her best. The paddle's name was "Mr. Blister." Pat said he paddled her so hard, he lifted her feet up off the ground. Things are progressing well for Reach Them, but I miss having Anderson full-time. We have an exceptional team and Summer Tucker is doing a tremendous job leading our Outreach team. Several of us are supposed to go to Nashville to hear Susie Vanderlip speak. Dean plans to fly us, so it should be a quick, fun trip.

Addie's cross country is proving to be enjoyable for her. She ran her first mile in 7.30. Not bad, for an 8 year old. I'm so proud of her! She is also in a Brownie troop, so I suppose we'll be hitting up all our friends to buy cookies and such. Her first meeting was today.
Sam loves soccer and his daddy! That child absolutely adores Tom! He would rather be with Tom than do anything else! School is starting to "click" for him and it's great to see him try hard and be successful. His art is unusually creative-so much like Drew's art used to be when he was in elementary school.
Chelcie is adjusting nicely to college. She took her first official "roadtrip" to Auburn this weekend. She's having a ball, testing her wings and preparing for her solo flight from the nest. Drew is right behind her. He is smokin' this year with cross country. I had the honor of driving him, Billy, and Peter to Nashville last weekend and Drew set his PR at 17.40. What a beast!
Tom is working hard all time. His blackberry is constant companion. I am proud of how hard he is working. A tree fell across the driveway last night and he had to cut it up at about 10, after working all day. He didn't even complain!
Well, we're heading to Greek Fest now! Pictures to follow...

Young Life, Comcast, Soccer, and Cross Country

I'm doing well to get some pictures taken these days. Addie and Drew are running cross country. Addie had the first meet of her life last Tuesday and I missed it because I had a staff meeting at school. Turns out the staff meeting was just an opportunity for the administrators to chew us out about a few people who did have their grades in on time. Unfortunately, I got Sherry Storms in trouble by laughing when she bumped her head on a table. Ms. Fuqua stopped in mid-rant and said, "Ladies, do you have a problem?" in the most hateful voice you could imagine. Of course, I said, "Yes," and when on to explain that Sherry had hit her head on the table. Ms. Fuqua was not amused in the least! She folded her arms, tapped her plastic flower clad foot and scowled for the rest of the afternoon. Sherry almost lost it because her feelings were so hurt, and I just got madder by the minute. I had come in early to supervise detention, and had to stay late for the parent meeting from 6-8. I felt disrespected, humiliated in front of the staff, and taken for granted. I wanted to get up and walk out the door for good. I could not believe she talked to us like that. It was not a good day for me.
Addie ran great and finished with a time of 7.43 for the mile. Not bad for a third grader and her first time running a cross country course. By the time I got home from school, she was already asleep in bed, but at least I got to talk to her on the phone.
Reach Them news of the week is that we have added Comcast as a sponsor. They've promised us heavy coverage, and donated $1,000 toward teacher tickets to the event. Eddie Jessup also contributed $1,000 this week for teacher tickets. We've got $10,000 worth of tickets promised, and now we only have $6,000 more to raise to cover the cost! Hallerin has agreed to "star" in our Comcast commercial along with Phil Williams. We've been abundantly blessed with many good people who are willing to help get the message out about Reach Them to Teach Them. I spoke to John Lee of the Boys and Girls Clubs this week. We met with the folks and the TN Theatre to firm up our details for the night of the event as well. Many, many things to do, but we're making definite progress.
Sad news, Linda McGhee, former secretary at A.L. Lotts Elementary passed away on Wednesday morning. I heard she was only 61 years old.
Chelcie's 19th birthday is tomorrow. I can't believe it's been 19 years since she came into our lives and made life so very interesting!
Tom, Addie, Sam, and I went to the Bearden/Farragut game last night. Bearden lost, but we had a good time sitting with Chelcie and Tyler Rosenbaum and Tyler's two roommates. Chelcie looked beautiful and I was almost caught off guard at how mature she looked. Drew was at the game too, but we didn't see him 'til we got home. He'd had some girl paint a bulldog on his chest. Sure wish I had a picture to show you here, but the moment passed. He didn't stay for the whole game because he had to take the ACT this morning. I sure hope he did well.
This morning, Addie and Sam had soccer games, so the first half of the day was spent at the soccer field. Sam's team lost, but Addie's team won! After the games, Tom left for Georgia and the kids and I went of find a keyboard cover for Chelcie's birthday. We got one for her along with a Cookie Cake from the Great American Cookie Co. It's a "cookie-themed" birthday for Chelcie because I sent a cookie bouquet to her dorm room yesterday. I sure hope she doesn't "toss her cookies" after we take her to Chili's for dinner tonight! We also went by Morgan's house to pick her up because Tom told Addie she could have her over to spend the night.
The Young Life banquet was last Saturday. We had the Slacks, the Gibsons, and my mom and dad at our table. Unfortunately, the Alfords didn't show up. The Eldridges canceled at the last minute and the Creasmans couldn't find a babysitter! Mayor Haslam shared a powerful message about the impact Young Life has had on his own life. He remembered a speaker at Windy Gap telling him that the decision to accept Jesus Christ as Lord of your life is too important a decision not to make. He was urged to accept Him or reject Him that weekend, and it's made all the difference in the world to him.
It's been a pretty good couple of weeks. There've been a few bumps in the road along the way, but I am grateful to have been on the journey.

Total Recall? Nope, but I'll Get Close!

We enjoyed a long weekend thanks to Labor Day. Chelcie had some young men from Florida pay her a visit. They stayed up in the loft at our house all weekend. Carson and Brian. Young Life pals. Nice boys.

They got in very late Friday night, so I didn't get to meet them until Saturday. Fortunately, they were relatively low maintenance! I changed the sheets on the mattresses in the loft and in doing so discovered the momentary shock of my life! I found a small baggie containing what appeared to be pot! After my heart dropped to my toes, and I remembered who my son is, my panic turned to amusement and suspicion. On closer inspection, I realized that the "pot" looked an awful lot like moss. Upon opening the baggie and taking a lungful of the suspicious substance, I knew it wasn't pot, but was actually moss. Not to be one to hoard panic to myself, I called Tom to the room with as much urgency in my voice as I could muster. He hauled a** up the ladder and I laughed to myself as I held up the baggie and watched the color drain from his face. As I handed the "evidence" over to him, I could suppress my smile no longer. Turns out, it was a plant! Drew put there on purpose! Big Goof-ball! He was hoping we'd find it and he'd laugh his little head off at his "joke." Where did he get such a warped sense of humor??

Saturday morning, the kids and I headed out to Victor Ashe Park to cheer Drew on at his first XCC meet of his senior year. He did great! Out of about 300 runners, he placed 19th! The Bearden team dominated the meet and Drew's time was his best start of the season time to date.

After the meet, we headed home to meet the company. Most of the day was spend relaxing and reading on the porch. I cooked a 'big'ol' spaghetti dinner complete with salad and bread for the entire family plus three! Chris Ellis stopped by to drop off the Two Rivers video and pictures. Ed stopped by too to provide instruction on how to connect wires. He left with the pictures and videotape.

After dinner, we went for a family walk on the RR tracks. Drew opted out, but Buffet, Sam, Addie, Tom, Chelcie, Brian, and Carson joined us for what turned out to be a lot of fun.

Sunday, I went to church with Addie and Sam and sat alone in the service until my dad showed up to join me. Mom wasn't feeling well, so he came alone. Miles and Katy came to the 11 o'clock service and I was happy to see them.

Sunday night, we headed to BoomsDay with everyone else in East Tennessee. We found our old West Park friends and enjoyed catching up and reminiscing about the good ol' days.

Thankfullly, Monday was a sleep-in day after our late night of fireworks and overhearing teenage boys discuss the civil rights movement at 3:30 am! Angela Gonda came by at 11:30 to spend some time together. I showed her around West Knoxville a little bit. She got the tour of Cedar Springs, Turkey Creek, Farragut and such before we landed at Lakeside Tavern for a little grouper for lunch. We had a very good time. I felt purposeful for the first time as I shared my heart a little bit. We talked about Crazy Love and trying to find God's purpose and then trusting Him to accomplish His will through us. Good time. We headed back to the house in time to bid the boys farewell on their trip down south as the head home to Florida. It was grilled cheese and chicken salad for dinner as Sam and I studied his spelling words and dined without Addie. She went swimming with Taylor and mooched a little dinner off of the Allins.

Tom just got home from working in Georgia, so I need to post some pix and wrap this up! Reach Them meeting tomorrow. So much to do, so little time!

Busy, busy, busy!

I originally started this blog in order to document my life. Well, here lately, it's been passing right before my eyes so quickly that I can't keep up with it!

Today, Chelcie, Tyler Rosenbaum, and Jamie brought lunch to me at school. We had a great time looking at the scrapbook Tyler's mom made for my third grade class the year I had him in my class.

Yesterday, I had a Reading Dept. meeting with our new Reading supervisor. I did not enjoy the meeting at all. Some people were talking when she wanted to talk, so she just looked at them and said, "Is everybody listening?" Ugh! So condescending! I did not feel like we were on the same page at all. I stopped by to see Chelcie for a minute while I picked up some stuff I had left in the Target bag that went to her dorm room by accident.

Now that RUSH is over, life can level out a little bit! She seems okay with not pledging a sorority. I'm so relieved and glad it's over!

Drew has a cross country meet at Victor Ashe Park on Saturday. I hear he's running really well, so I'm excited about watching him run.

Monday was our de-briefing meeting on Two Rivers. We had a little bump in the road with Lynn Hill's assistant principal, Barbara Thompson, feeling "attacked" because a young woman shared her brother's story. He died of a drug overdose last January. I believe we addressed the issue and now we can put it to rest...I hope!

Last Thursday, a young man shot and killed another young man in the cafeteria at Central High School. I don't think it was coincidence that this tragedy happened two days after our event at Two Rivers Pavillion.

Tomorrow, I have a meeting at the Boy Scout headquarters. They were supposed to send directions, but I have not received them yet.

Saturday, Suzanne Stelling and I headed down to Market Square to spend a little time with Nikki and Angela, our proteges! While I was there I got a call from Chelcie that she had been cut from Chi Omega.

Last Sunday, I went to NorthStar with Sam. Drew went to WestLake, Chelcie stayed at UT, Addie spent the night with Morgan and Tom said he had work to do, but he "surprised" me by showing up at church. Chelcie was feeling pretty down in the dumps, so I picked her up and took her to Jason's Deli. We saw Greta Schwall there with her 3 boys!

Friday was our 22nd Anniversary, so we cashed in a gift card at Bravo. We had dinner early because Tom worked the concession stand at the Bearden game.

I know I'm forgetting to record so many things that happened this week, but I thought I'd better get something down before I forgot what's left!

On the Gerbil Wheel!

Round and round we go! Life has picked up its pace significantly since school has started. So much to blog and so little time. It frustrates me not to be able to share the details and paint word pictures like I want to, but I'll have to settle for getting the moments typed and worry about the details later.

Starting with today and working backward-School has been wonderful! We've had the best start ever for the beginning of the year! My classes are amazing and I love my students! We're going to go a long way this year. The big news of the day was a shooting at Central High School. Apparently, a student shot another student at point-blank range and the student died. Given that just a few weeks ago we had a shooting at a local church, this is hitting very close to home! After school, I went to Sam's parent meeting at Lotts and learned all about how to be successful in first grade. Sam and I are really going to have to buckle down and study! After the meeting, I went by Kroger to pick up a card for Tom (tomorrow's our 22 anniversary). Both of us almost forgot it entirely. Sad, I know, but life gets busy. Then I met Addie, Sam and Tom at Buddy's for a little dinner before heading home to clean the filthy house. Too bad I don't have a wife to stay home and clean for me! Addie asked an interesting question today. She wanted to know if there were more people in the world or more words in the world. I have no idea!

Yesterday, I met with our county mayor, Mike Ragsdale and his assistant, Mary. Both of them were so, so nice and I very much enjoyed my time with them. Mayor Ragsdale gave me $1,000 for Reach Them and pledged his full support. I wasn't nervous about meeting with him. I guess I was just so tired that I was numb! After our meeting, I picked up Chelcie and Jamie at UT and brought them "home" to Moe's for dinner. We stopped by the house and picked up Addie and Sam. Chelcie was disappointed to see that "her" room had been invaded by Drew. She's tired, stressed, and under a lot of pressure due to Rush. I pray all goes well for her. It's a painful process! The Longs met us at Moe's then I took the girls back to the dorm and managed to get back home by 9. Sam and Addie got to bed late and I couldn't sleep. I did see a Jamacan runner break a world record in the 200 at the Olympics.

Tuesday was our pre-event at Two Rivers and I wish I could post an entry just documenting the details surrounding that night, but I don't have time right now. Our team was amazing! We had people working very hard on their specific area. We had direction signs this year that added a lot of "class" to drive in to the Pavilion. Our superintendent came and supported us, along with Karen Carson, Rodney Russell, and several other "dignitaries." I'm gradually overcoming my feelings of intimidation. I figure if God can use me, I'll just have to let Him do the talking and quit focusing so much on myself. Cavanaugh did a fabulous job on his song! Chris Bruce shared a moving tribute to his father, Ken, and Sarah Gore's video was pretty difficult to watch. Scott Cagle was amazing as always and Bill Williams was the icing on the cake! All went exceptionally well. Ed Knowling had a bird land on him, just in case he was starting to wonder...He also worked his behind off, moving tables, chairs, podium, setting up sound, video, dvd, CDs, powerpoint and every other detail that needed attention. I have no idea how he did it all! Anderson had the tables looking sensational and Laurie was the team captain who organized it all. Summer Tucker had goody bags stacked 8 high in the back of her car and door prizes that were so visually appealing, the bags were gifts themselves! Everyone made it happen. Travis and Chick-fil-A took care of all the food without a single problem. I was in awe! Still am! My family showed up to support me-Tom, Drew, Mom, Dad, Lori, and Katie and Ricky! Dean even made it! It was a special night for a special purpose! I hope I'll get some pictures to post here.

Monday...at the moment, I don't even remember Monday! Ah, yes, here it comes! I had Addie's parent meeting at Lotts. I was a little bit late to it though because I went to APS to pick up t-shirts and signs. Jack and Sue have been amazing! I am grateful for their generosity and friendship! I picked up Koko's for dinner for Drew, Addie, Sam and me. We're so busy, there's hardly any time to breathe! It's not good to be this busy, but we're doing the best we can to spend time together.

What a Week!

Let's see...where to begin? Sam started first grade this week. Addie moved on up to third grade. My "baby Drew" is a SENIOR, and Chelcie Brooke starts college! I initiated a whole new group of eighth graders.

Last weekend, Tom and I ran away from home and rode bikes all around downtown Knoxville. We ate dinner on Market Square and spent a little time with my protege, Angela Gonda. She's an amazing girl - a Furman grad, and a new employee of KARM.

Sunday, we went to the late service at NorthStar and headed out for a quick lunch at Jason's with the Mayos. Claire and Rose are all grown up beautiful young ladies!

Tonight, Chelcie, Addie, and Sam and I ate at Moe's for the last time for a while. Chelcie moves into the dorm tomorrow. I don't think it has hit me yet that she's really moving away, not going on a vacation. Sure, it's only nine miles, but it's a new chapter of her life. I'm proud of her and she's ready. Good things are ahead for my #1 daughter!

Addie wants to run Cross Country this year for Lotts. She's also looking at playing soccer, and participating in Girl Scouts. She'll be a busy girl! Sam's sticking with soccer, but he would also like to join cub scouts too.

This morning, our breakfast club met at Panera Bread. I still love our "downtime" together.

Not being divided into teams at school has added a little tension because Karen Peterman feels the need to patrol the halls between classes and take all the backpacks, books, and notebooks that the kids have left behind. One kid even missed the bus because she was looking for her backpack that Sherry had told her to put on the top shelf above the lockers. Turns out, Karen had taken it and put it in the teachers' workroom.

I had the opportunity to talk to Dr. McIntyre's assistant in the hopes of meeting him soon. I have a meeting scheduled with Mayor Ragsdale next Wednesday afternoon.

The Young Life Table Host banquet was Tuesday night. Calhoun's catered the event and it was very tasty! I'm grateful for Young Life and the impact it has had on me, my husband, and my daughter. Now if only it could reach out and pull in my son.

More later...pictures too!
